After all, it was designed with the help of Jacques Cousteau and Comex (who you know from their infamous Rolex contracts). While this watch was a superlative diver, it was roughly twice the cost of the Rolex Submariner, and thus it never caught on with consumers.So now that the PloProf has reached cult status, Omega has gone ahead and re-released this weird looking diver with a co-axial movement for 2009. It looks JUST like the original, and is now rated to 1200 meters, twice the depth rating of the 1960s version. It also comes on the choice of three new straps, the Shark (pictured to the right), or a black or orange rubber strap that is adjustable to fit over diving suits.Unfortunately for many of us, the updated PloProf will still be rather expensive. After all, you are getting a Zenith Chronomaster El Primero T 40mm Chronomaster T Open XZE320 watches co-axial movement in a legendary design, a chronometer rating, and a case good to 1200 meters below the succes. Selling price will be around $7500 when available in a few months.This is a watch we've always loved in the vintage form (we can't tell you how many times we've tried these on at Antiquorum previews) and we love the idea of a 2009 refresh. The Rolex Submariner is a watch that needs no introduction (and yet it seems like we give you one every time we write about it). Regardless, it's a classic, and today we are featuring the one that started it all. This is a Rolex Submariner reference number 6204, which made its debut in 1954 at Basel world, although it Zenith Chronomaster El Primero T 40mm Chronomaster T Open XZE320 watches went into production a year earlier. This particular watch is in excellent condition, comes with the original Rolex bracelet, gilt dial, bezel, and mercedes hands; essentially everything you could ask for in a watch like this. What is interesting to note is that only some of the model 6204 Submariners have the word "Submariner" printed on the dial, as there is believed to have been some controversy regarding trademarks for that name. This particular watch does have the name printed on the dial. As the dealer notes, it does bear a striking resemblance to the Turnograph, as many early sports models did at that point.This watch is selling for $28,000, so it is certainly not for a novice collector. However, if there is one watch that always catches the eyes of collectors it's a Rolex Sports watch.
